Worldwide challenges of multidrug-resistant bacteria in patients with hematologic malignancies

The emergence of infections due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria poses a major public health threat to all patients, but patients with hematologic malignancies are especially at risk. A common thread across all classes of bacteria is that increased reliance on and usage of broad-spectrum antibacterial agents, combined with the intrinsic ability of bacteria to develop and transmit resistance-conferring mutations, has led to the widespread dissemination of MDR organisms. In this article, we summarize the most worrisome MDR bacteria, assess their clinical impact on patients with hematologic malignancies and outline measures that are required to mitigate this impact.
