‘Mix n match’ protein opens new path to target cancer’s diversity

Written by Daniel Barrett, Future Science Group

New insights into how a specific protein linked to the mixing of genetic information in cells could potentially be used to tackle diverse and drug resistant cancers containing proteins of the same family. Researchers from The Institute of Cancer Research (London, UK) have determined the structure and function of a protein known as DHX8, which is associated with genetic mixing.   The process this ‘mix n match’ protein undertakes is linked to cancer’s progression and drug resistance. The team hope that by studying this protein further, they can find a new solution to treating drug-resistant cancers.  The study was published in the Biochemical Journal and was funded by Cancer Research UK (London, UK) and the Faringdon Fund, the latter formed...
