ASCO23: Medicaid expansion associated with survival improvements for both Black and White gastrointestinal cancer patients

Findings from the examination of racial disparities in mortality rates in patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancer in the period following Medicaid expansion have demonstrated encouraging results. The findings will be presented at the ASCO Annual Meeting 2023 (2−6 June, IL, USA). Researchers analyzed data from the National Cancer Database, focused on 86,052 patients diagnosed with pancreatic, colorectal, or stomach cancer between 2009 and 2019. Of these patients, 22,109 (25.7%) were Black, and 63,943 (74.3%) were White. Among the Black patients, 66.7% were covered by Medicaid while 33.3% did not have any insurance.
