The State-Based Initiatives Task Group within the American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Roundtable has developed a state‐based, online SBI Planning Tool to streamline lung cancer efforts.

The American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Roundtable (ACS NLCRT), established to bridge different aspects of the healthcare industry, have developed an State-Based Initiatives (SBI) Planning Tool through meetings, interviews and usability testing. This tool provides an easily usable, centralized, web-based approach to reducing lung cancer mortality within the USA by providing personalized recommendations based on a state’s specific needs.

The tool allows healthcare professionals, business and organizations to navigate complex state landscapes allowing for the identification of critical gaps in lung cancer programs as well as untapped policy opportunities that could save thousands of lives annually. Woven into the tools are health equity considerations in a bid to prevent discrimination against already underserved communities.

This web-based platform is dynamic, made to continuously update its information to allow for consideration of emerging recommendations and innovations in lung cancer care, subject to evaluation by the built-in metrics to inspect its reach and impact. The Lung Cancer Atlas has been introduced alongside the SBI Planning Tool as a complementary interactive data visualization platform that allows for the review of geographic disparities.

Senior author of the study Robert Smith from the American Cancer Society (GA, USA), stated: “Before the ACS NLCRT was established, but more so after, state coalitions focused on public health initiatives to reduce lung cancer deaths have sprung up.”

He went onto to explain that “It is often said that ‘all public health is local,’ and the aim of the ACS NLCRT SBI Task Group is to give local leaders, health care professionals, and advocates the tools to efficiently and effectively develop tailored programs to advance lung cancer control in their state. Among the many achievements of the ACS NLCRT, the development of the SBI Planning tool ranks high on the list.”
