#OCTalks breast surgery and reconstruction with Michael Douek


In this interview Roshaine Wijayatunga (Senior Editor: Oncology) speaks with Michael Douek at the 2017 NCRI Cancer Conference 5–8 Nov 2017 about novel techniques for breast surgery and reconstruction.

Questions:

1. What inspired you to become a breast surgeon and develop a special interest in breast cancer surgery and breast reconstruction?

2. You are one of the pioneers of intra-operative radiotherapy for breast cancer. How have you seen this technique develop as a therapy?

3. You also set up the first prospective trial of a biological device for breast implant reconstruction. What challenges do you encounter within breast reconstruction?

4. One of your research interests is in developing and evaluating novel techniques for cancer surgery. Can you tell us a little about a project that you are working on currently?

5. You co-hosted two sessions during the NCRI this year covering breast surgery and hot topics in the area. Can you tell us the key points discussed during these sessions?

6. How would you like to see the field of breast surgery and reconstruction evolve over the next 5-10 years?

Profile:

Michael Douek is a breast surgeon with an interest in breast cancer surgery and breast reconstruction. He is professor of surgical oncology at King’s College London and honorary consultant surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (both UK). He was awarded a prestigious Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2015.
