Leukemias are classified according to the speed of evolution of the disease into either acute or chronic and each of these is then subdivided depending on the cell type. Thus, follows that the variations are acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, taken together, represent the fifth most commonly occurring cancers and the second leading cause of cancer death.
