Thyroid cancer is the most common form of endocrine cancer. Treatment options for non-advanced thyroid cancer include surgery (part or all thyroid gland removal) or the application of radioactive iodine. Whereas treatment options for advanced thyroid cancer encompasses drug therapies. Side effects of treatment include high blood pressure, fatigue and loss of appetite – indicating that the treatment of thyroid cancer is not targeted enough. A focus should be put on increasing our understanding of the genomic alternations of advanced thyroid cancer so that individual tumors can be targeted and oncologists can identify when to alter treatment strategies and reduce drug toxicity.
