ASCO22: breast cancer patients over 55 years old may not need radiation therapy

Written by Rachel Jenkins, Future Science Group

A single-arm prospective Phase III trial, LUMINA, has suggested that patients who are 55 years of age and older with low-grade luminal A-type breast cancer may only need endocrine therapy following breast-conserving surgery and could avoid radiation therapy entirely. The study was recently presented at the 2022 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting (3–6 June; Chicago, IL, USA) and could impact many patients who have very low chances of their breast cancer returning without radiation therapy.
