Cancer chemoprevention at the crossroads?


This is the age of precision medicine. The anticipation for cancer treatment is that the mystery of cancer can be deciphered so that the tumor can be targeted to affect cures. However, the holy grail of cancer therapeutics is to detect and prevent the development of the disease at an early stage. This noble strategy would alleviate an enormous burden in human suffering and, as a result, would reduce the cost to healthcare systems. It is currently estimated that one in four individuals will die of cancer and the reason for this is that the population is living longer and the majority of cancer is associated with old age.
