Biomarkers for cancer are essential for diagnosis, prognosis and for predicting the response to specific treatments. Each biomarker has a degree of specificity and sensitivity. For example, estrogen receptors are good biomarkers for breast carcinomas, but there are breast cancers that are estrogen receptor negative, and there are other tumors, e.g., ovarian cancers, which are estrogen receptor positive.
